MLB DFS Value Vault August 12: Jordan Montgomery is too cheap

We have a massive 13 major league baseball game slate for tonight, which means a lot of MLB DFS. The DFS slate begins at 7:05 p.m. ET on all three sites – DraftKings, FanDuel and Yahoo. Be sure to check out our pre-lockdown MLB Weather Center as well as MLB lineups, MLB Vegas odds plus projections and an MLB lineup builder in our Fantasy Alarm MLB Tools page. This slate is stacked with high priced weapons like Max Scherzer and Carlos Rodon and top team stacks, so you’ll need to find value plays and that’s where we come in. I spent the morning researching and finding the best points per dollar games on the slate. So let’s go ahead and open Friday’s MLB DFS Value Vault.

Tyler Mahle (MIN) DK$8.5,000/FD$9.0,000/Yahoo$43

With a group of high priced weapons tonight Tyler Mahle falls into the category of medium values. It has a high-ceilinged dream match with the free-swinging angels, and it’s the best place he’s been since signing for the Reds. They’re shooting 25.1% from right-handed throwing this season and for the past two weeks they’ve had a horrible .135 ISO/.270wOBA team with a 25.4% K-rate and an under 100 wRC+. His strikeouts are down this season, but with a 1.01 WHIP over his last five starts and an average of 18 DKFPs, Mahle is firmly in play tonight in tournament play.

Jordan Montgomery (STL) DK$6.8,000/FD$8.5,000/Yahoo$34

Jordan Montgomery returns to the hill tonight as the Cardinals open a three-game series at pitch-friendly Busch Stadium with the Brewers. This will be Montgomery’s second start since last week, when the Yankees traded him for an injured outfielder. Harrison Bader. JMo made his Cards debut last Saturday against his former team the Yankees and looked like an ace as he handed out five shutout innings in a 1-0 victory. With a 4-3 record and 3.53 ERA / 1.08 WHIP on the season, he gets a solid game tonight against the shocked Brewers who are hitting a clip high of 25.9% against LHP and a bad ISO of 0.098.

Coarse odor (BAL) $2,000 DK/$2,300 FD/$9 Yahoo

Sure, Coarse odor is still a “boom or bust” GPP game but you gotta love tonight’s game against righties Corey Kluber, where he is 8 for 19 (.421) with three bombs. With an ISO of 0.186 and 36% hard contact against right-handers, the smell is at minimum price and against a pitcher who allows a 40% flyball rate with 37% hard contact. The smell should be a piece of stacks of Orioles tonight.

Christian Arroyo (BOS) $2.0,000 DK / $2.3,000 FD

Yahoo is the only site that respects Christian Arroyo while DraftKings and FanDuel remain asleep at the wheel. He’s on fire – hitting .400 over the past week with a .447 wOBA and .410 over the past 30 days with a home run and .220 ISO/.461wOBA. This price is a bargain as Arroyo has 10 hits in his last six games and will face the right-hander Domingo German who struggled in the RvR split this season allowing a .382 IDO/.445Woba.

Darin Ruf (NYM) DK$3.6,000/DF$2.6,000

Darin Ruf made Mets fans very happy in his short stint since being traded from the Giants. The right-handed hitting squad specialist is 5 for 15 with a couple of doubles and five RBIs since the trade and should rake tonight against the Phillies southpaw Ranger Suarez. Ruf has an ISO/.401wOBA of .298 in his last two seasons in the peloton, with a 42% flyball and a 48% hard contact rate, plus a cut of .256/.359/.521.

Other main values:

Brandan Belt (SFG) DK$3.2000/FD$2.5000/$12 Yahoo Should beat 2n/a versus Bryse Wilson

Elehuris Montero (COL) DK$2.7000/FD$2.7000 Principal part of Arenado deal – raked since call and minimum price to Coors

Alexander Thomas (ARI) $3.8K DK/$3.2K FD Batting 2n/a tonight in Coors

Alex Verdugo (BOS) $2.9K DK/$3.0K FD Hit cleanup with LvR perk over German
